Rimworld - How to Build Multiple Colonies Tips and Tricks

Rimworld gives players the opportunity to build multiple colonies. In this guide we will tell you how to do this. You will also find useful tips and tricks here.

Rimworld is a game that allows you to develop your own colony on an alien planet. It is not an easy task, but if the settlement works well, it is very rewarding. Sooner or later, many people start to wonder whether it is possible to create multiple colonies in Rimworld. Of course you can, and here you will find advice on how to do it.

How to enable multiple colonies in Rimworld

The ability to build multiple colonies is not something the game allows by default. In order to be able to settle in more than one place at the same time, you must first change the game options.

  1. Go into options – you can do this in the main menu or during the game.
  2. Gameplay – select this tab.
  3. Maximum numbers of colonies – set this slider to a number that suits you, up to a maximum of 5.

The first time you configure the number of colonies, a warning will appear. It is advisable to read it. Remember that several colonies at the same time will increase the load on your computer, especially if they are large. In addition, you will have to manage two (or more) separate settlements, so this will also increase your workload to some extent.

  1. World – first go to the World tab at the bottom of the screen. This will open the map.
  2. Form Caravan – press your home settlement, a form caravan button will appear at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Choose supplies – next the game will open a window where you can choose who should go on the journey and what to take with them.
  4. Wait - once you have given orders, your colonists still need to collect all the necessary equipment and travel. You must therefore wait.
  5. Settle - once your pawns have arrived at their destination, select the Settle button at the bottom of the screen. This will generate a new map.

Why it is worth having several colonies in Rimworld

  1. Resources – players usually settle in several places due to the lack of resources. If you live in a forest, you may run out of mountain resources, and if you settle between rocks, wood will be quite scarce.
  2. Wealth – Rimworld decides whether and with what forces to attack you based on what wealth you have accumulated. Some players, in order to avoid being attacked with too many forces, decide to divide their treasures evenly to cheat the game.
  3. New start - your first settlement may not necessarily appeal to you. Often it is a creation built to survive. As technology develops, more parts of it are added and you learn new mechanics. At some stage, it is easier to create a new base than to rebuild an old one.

Basics

  1. Form Caravan – when selecting resources, the game will automatically offer you a selection of supplies. This is useful if you're going on a regular expedition, but if you're going to settle, it's better to turn this off and select them yourself.
  2. Supplies - when creating a caravan, stock it with a solid portion of food, let your colonists focus on building a new settlement rather than looking for a meal. If you suspect there won't be easily accessible building material on site, you may also want to bring along a little to build a temporary shelter (or some advanced equipment). Also take animals that have a lot of carrying capacity.
  3. Colonists – remember that this is supposed to be a new colony, so you need people there with different skills (warriors, cooks, farmers, miners) to make the settlement self-sufficient (at least in the basics).
  4. Switching between colonies – you can do that by clicking on portraits of your people at the top of the screen.

Mechanics

  1. Attacks and events - you now have two colonies, this means that attacks and events will also be calculated for them separately. It may therefore happen that you are repelling 2 attacks at the same time.
  2. Building a settlement – you cannot build a new colony directly adjacent to an old one.
  3. Temporary settlement – you do not have to create a permanently inhabited settlement. You can only treat it as a source of resources with a temporary shelter. Once you have collected enough materials, create a caravan and take everything valuable to the home colony. Even if the base is destroyed, it can always be rebuilt.
  4. Travel pods - if you are planning colonies far away from each other, be sure to develop this technology beforehand. It will allow you to quickly exchange resources and people between settlements.
