Release of Warzone 3.0 with CoD MW3 - Will There Be Warzone 3
With CoD Modern Warfare 3 oficially announced, we can speculate if CoD Warzone 3.0 will be released alongside it. Let's find out what the most probable option is.
After rebooting the Modern Warfare series in 2019 and releasing the sequel in 2022, it has taken up speed. It was confirmed that the third installment, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, will be released this year. The latest part will be developed by Sledgehammer Games though, instead of Infinity Ward. This is a similar scenario to the original Modern Warfare trilogy, as Sledgehammer Games was also involved in Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Arguably, the most popular mode of rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series was Warzone, which debuted several months after the 2019 release. With Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2.0 was also released. Will MW3 feature a refreshed Warzone mode? Let’s gather what we know so far.
Will there be CoD Warzone 3?
As already mentioned, the first Warzone game was released as a free to play part of CoD MW. Warzone features its own story arcs, which connect them to main games. The first instalment of Warzone included Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard story arcs.
When the second part of Warzone debuted alongside MW2, it cut ties with the first game, starting a fresh story arc. Looking back, we can see that Warzone sub-series consists of several subsequent main game themes. Nothing has been confirmed officially so far, but since the time between MW2 and 3 is only one year, I think it’s safe to assume that Modern Warfare 3 will become a part of Warzone 2.0 arc, rather than create its own, separate story. It seems unlikely that the plot of this F2P sequel will end featuring only one arc. What is more, there has been a new Warzone map leak, Las Almas, which would further confirm the theory that Warzone 2.0 will continue its development.
Activision is not known as a charitable company, and creating a completely new Warzone part would not be cost efficient. Nevertheless, as every MW part introduced its new iteration of Warzone, the only alternative move I can see they would be willing to make is to rebrand Warzone 2.0 as Warzone 3.0 without any major changes. This would be a similar scenario to what happened with Overwatch and Overwatch 2, where only minor modifications were made, and the business model changed.
Again, nothing has been confirmed as of now, so we can only speculate and wait for official communication.
