Red Dead Redemption 2 features 200 species of animals, birds and fish
Perhaps you will find more animals in Red Dead Redemption 2 than you came across in real life. But not all of them are there to be wondered at.
Red Dead Redemption 2 fauna is perhaps richer than any fauna in any game to date. Rockstar unveiled that there are around 200 species spanning across the Wild West, all “responding to their environment in a unique way.” This means that the whitetail buck behaves differently than the blacktail buck, “bison and pronghorn traverse the plains in large herds, scavengers quickly sniff out carrion, sockeye salmon leap upstream, wolves attack in packs surrounding their prey” and so on. This adds up to a truly “complex ecosystem” where “any predator can quickly turn into prey”, which, together, comes across as the Wild West Starter Pack.
Additionally, there are 19 breeds of horse featured in the game. You can acquire your trusty steed any way you want – anything from capturing it out in the wild to “Grand Theft Equus” is allowed. But unlike soulless cars, your horse must be taken care of (yes, that means grooming and feeding, among others) if you want to see it perform better on the road, basically. Also, equine scrotums shrink in cold. It’s just a small detail Rockstar added to the game to make it more immersive, and we thought it was worth knowing.
All the animals, birds, and fish species can also be hunted and turned into resources, such as meat or hides. The hunting process is complex and whether it turns out successful or not depends on many factors. The weapon of your choosing, the surroundings of your prey, the weather – all must be taken into consideration before setting out for a hunt. Unless you are “hunting” fish. Then all you need is a little bit of patience. And some quality bait.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and is due out on October 26.
