Quake 4 Available for Free Through Xbox Insider PC

Quake 4 and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory have appeared in the Xbox Insider program on PC. The games can be downloaded for free as part of closed tests. It is possible that the games will soon enrich the Game Pass catalog on PC.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Quake 4 and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory have appeared for free download as part of the Xbox Insider program on PC.
  • It is possible that id Software is preparing some kind of surprise for QuakeCon, which will be held in August.

Game Pass subscribers on PC can currently play three games from the Quake series, but there are many indications that the list will soon be expanded by another item. What's more, you can already play Quake 4 for free, but the way to get the game is quite unobvious.

Quake 4 available for testing

Last year we got a successful remaster of the first Quake 1, and now it's not impossible that we'll get the same for Quake 4. The game has just appeared in the Xbox Insider test program on PC and anyone willing to play it can, just sign up for testing.

The game is available all the time on Steam (it's currently availalable 60% off), but running it on modern computers in decent quality requires a bit of work. Meanwhile, as noted by AgentStrangeTV who runs the Twitter account Powered by id Tech, the version that appeared in testing on the Xbox Insider Hub, requires no additional changes to the configuration file and runs smoothly in 1440p resolution. In his opinion - much smoother than the version from Steam.

To play Quake 4 on PC right now, download the Xbox Insider Hub app for Windows PC, and then sign up for the closed testing program. You then go in the app to the familiarization versions tab, where you will find Quake 4 (and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory) to download for free.

It is possible that the appearance of the game in the Xbox Insider program has some connection with the upcoming QuakeCon, which will kick off on Thursday, August 18 and perhaps that's when we will hear more about the new version of the game. Who knows, maybe the remaster is also being prepared for consoles?

Quake 4 is probably the lowest-rated part of the series. Both players and reviewers at the time of its release were unanimous in the fact that the the title did not quite live up to expectations. However, a lot of time has passed since its release in 2005 and, despite some shortcomings, Q4 has already become an iconic game, albeit on a smaller scale than its predecessors. It is certainly worth giving it a chance, especially for free.
