The last few days have been marked by a scandal related to an attempt to force the use of PlayStation Network accounts in the PC version of Helldivers 2. This time the players won and Sony had to back out of this idea. The social response was so negative that the Japanese company quickly moved to provide more details on how it will look in the case of the PC release of Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut.

  1. Sony-owned studio Sucker Punch nervously watched the weekend storm surrounding Helldivers 2. To avoid any doubt, the developers informed that on PC Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut will require a PlayStation Network account only for multiplayer mode. However, the single-player campaign is supposed to be free of such a requirement.
  2. Sucker Punch Studio miscalculated if they were hoping that this statement would resolve the issue. Encouraged by the victory in the Helldivers 2 case, players are now trying to force the complete removal of the PlayStation Network account requirement for Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut as well. More and more messages are appearing on the Steam forum of the game, demanding this change.
  3. It is difficult to predict whether players will be successful with Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut. However, the situation of this game is different. It is to immediately start with the requirement of a PSN account (in the case of Helldivers 2, the anger of players was caused, among other things, by the fact that this change was attempted to be introduced many months after the premiere). Furthermore, the main attraction of the Sucker Punch studio game is the single-player mode, and the multiplayer gameplay is just a nice addition.

What argues for the removal of the requirement is the fact that PlayStation Network services aren't available in most countries. You can make an account by providing false information, but this may be punished with a ban. In the case of Helldivers 2, the game was removed from sale in 177 countries last week for this reason.

Therefore, the question arises as to how Sony will address this issue in the case of Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut. Will the game not be released for sale in these countries? Will it also be available for purchase there with a disclaimer about the multiplayer not working? Removing the requirement for a PSN account would be a good and simple solution to this situation.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut on PC will be released on May 16 this year. The game will cost $59.99.
