Path of Exile 2 More Like Elden Ring Than Diablo 4
It looks like the developers of Path of Exile 2 want to end the endless comparisons of their action RPG to Diablo.
When speaking of Path of Exile, the Diablo series immediately comes to mind. It is not surprising, because since the announcement of 2013's PoE the brand was presented as an alternative to Blizzard's iconic work. However, it seems that the situation is changing - Grinding Gear Games is trying to break with this tradition.
In an interview with IGN, Path of Exile 2's director, Jonathan Rogers, explained that the game deliberately avoids an MMO structure reminiscent of the solutions from Diablo IV. Instead, it will follow the path of Elden Ring and will bet on a more "hardcore flair" .
"It [Diablo - ed. note] certainly has a lot of advantages, such as cooldowns, rotations and the like, but also just more open world design and that kind of thing. We, on the other hand, are going more in the direction of Elden Ring. We're much more action-focused, but with some hardcore flair," the developer explained.
He also added that PoE2 is much more focused on action and excellent bosses, as well as a huge amount of content. The game is also expected to reward players for experimentation.
"I think this is something that many players want - you can do a huge number of experiments in our game with character classes and compilations. This will keep you alive for a very long time. So yes, simply in terms of depth there's a lot more going on here in Path of Exile," Rogers explained.
The developer also commented on the wave of criticism Blizzard faced after the release of update 1.1.0. "I feel very bad for the developers. I'm sure they want the best, but yes, it's a hard lesson to learn."
Grinding Gear Games revealed that during closed beta testing of Path of Exile 2, which will kick off on June 7, 2024, players will be able to try out the full version of the game.
Unfortunately, the release date of the full version remains a big unknown. All we know is that it will be available on PCs and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Like the predecessor, it will be a free-to-play game.
