Passenger Recreated His Flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator in Real Time
MFS2020 is an extremely accurate simulation of flying and the globe. One of curious plane passenger proved it during a real flight.
Microsoft Flight Simulator turned out to be not only a successful civilian flight simulator. In addition, it recreates the entire globe in an unprecedented way in video games, , including its time zones, the arrangement of stars in a given place and time, the current weather and, of course, the appearance of terrain and cities. In times of pandemic and numerous travel restrictions, for many people it has also become the only substitute for flying around the world.
We've seen many videos comparing real locations to their appearance in Flight Simulator 2020. An even more interesting idea came from one of the independent developers and people behind the gamedev.world conference - Rami Ismail. He decided to check the accuracy of Microsoft Flight Simulator, recreating the flight from Montreal to Amsterdam during a real trip aboard the actual plane.
Using a gaming laptop, Rami set everything up as it was in realitz, and using the plane's wifi network, he reported his experiment on Twitter. Just like real pilots, he also used an autopilot during his many hours of flying over the ocean, and was able to sleep during this time. MFS2020 generally did very well with such a long simulation, faithfully reproducing it.
Rami reported only a few minutes of time deviation when reaching some of the main points of the journey, but it needs to be taken into account that he probably did not have exactly the same cruising speed as a real plane at all times. The messages about the same appearance of the clouds, their ceiling level or visible stars are also impressive.
"The sim was about 4 minutes fast. Weather matched, light matched, stars matched. Wild. Absolutely staggering."
The creators of Microsoft Flight Simulator continue to improve and develop their work. In addition to many patches, there are two updates with terrain appearance, focusing on Japan and United States. The next update, aiming to improve the UK look will be released in January. There are also preliminary dates for slightly more distant projects, from which we learned that helicopters won't appear in the game until around 2022. In December, however, you will be able to experience flying in VR goggles.
Microsoft Flight Simulator was released in August this year and received very good reviews. On Metacritic the game's average rating is 91%. The release date of the Xbox version is still unknown.
