One Piece Fans Believe That Oda Finally Introduced Luffy's Mom. However, This Theory Isn't Without Flaws
One Piece fans have long wondered who Luffy's mother is, and some of them believe that Eiichiro Oda has finally revealed her. However, not everyone is convinced that the character depicted in the new volume of the manga could be the main character's mother.
Even though One Piece has been published for almost 30 years, fans still have no idea who the mother of the main character - Luffy, is. His father, Dragon, and his grandfather, Garp, are well-known, but the identity of his mother remains a mystery that intrigues the series' fans.
According to Mayumi Tanaka, Luffy's voice actress, Eiichiro Oda isn't interested in exploring the backstory of Luffy's mom, which is why it hasn't been revealed until now. However, in a special SBS column in the new volume of One Piece, an image of a woman was released who, some fans believe, might be Luffy's mother. Support for this theory comes from the fact that she resembles the main character of One Piece, and this would explain why Kuma sent Luffy to Amazon Lily, where his alleged mother, the empress of the Kuja tribe, lived before her death.
Toritoma is believed to be Luffy's mother, who passed away from the love sickness that affects the empresses of the Kuja tribe. This disease involves the person suffering from it experiencing immense pain when the person they love intends to leave the island. Whereas in the presence of this person, she gains tremendous strength and nothing matters to her, precisely except her loved one. According to Toritoma's fans, she died because Dragon left her.
However, other fans of One Piece refute this theory, arguing that it has too many holes to be true. They note that Oda couldn't have presented Luffy's mother in a supplementary column like SBS; instead, he would do so in the manga. But supporters of the theory that Toritoma is Luffy's mother argue that the author of One Piece previously called the main character's mother an unimportant character, so introducing her in such a place would make sense.
A more difficult argument to counter is that according to the manga, only females are born in the Kuja tribe, so Toritoma couldn't have given birth to Luffy. Furthermore, those who oppose this theory argue that Toritoma's story doesn't align with Oda's statement about Luffy's mother, who, according to the author of One Piece, is alive. Toritoma, on the other hand, died from the love sickness.
And what do you think about that? Is Toritoma really Luffy's mother, or is the former empress of the Kuja tribe another missed shot by One Piece fans?
