From Nintendo's financial report, summarizing the fiscal year 2022-2023, which ended on March 31, we learned that the Japanese company's results were slightly weaker than in previous years, but it still remains on a strong upswing and is consistently a strong competitor to Sony and Microsoft.

  1. In the period under review, Nintendo generated $12.042 billion in net sales revenue.
  2. This is 5.525% worse than in fiscal 2021-2022, which, in turn, was 3.614% weaker than 2020-2021 - that year, however, was particularly successful over the past five years; as it saw a 34.42% increase in revenue.
  3. The vast majority of this amount, $11.347 billion, came from Switch sales, as well as various types of content and services dedicated to the console.
  4. The "big N" got $268 million from sales of amiibo figurines and platforms other than switch.
  5. 383 million dollars came from mobile games, IPs related to them and royalties.
  6. Meanwhile, $42 million was generated by sales of playing cards.

It is worth mentioning to recall here, that according to data from the Kyoto-based giant's recent financial report both Switch sales and interest in games designed for the platform declined during the period under review. Despite the recorded decline, the result should therefore be considered really good.

Game sales

Which Nintendo games sold best in fiscal year 2022-2023? Here there are no major surprises:

  1. in first place were Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet, which in total moved 22.1 million copies;
  2. also Splatoon 3 sold quite well - at 10.67 million copies;
  3. also worth mentioning: Nintendo Switch Sports (9.6 million copies), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (8.45 million copies - including copies that shipped in previous fiscal years, sales of this title total to 53.79 million units) and Kirby and the Forgotten Land (3.81 million copies - counting copies that reached players' hands in March 2022, it is 6.46 million units).

Significantly, as many as 35 games on Switch - both those from Nintendo and other companies - have achieved sales of more than one million copies.

Nintendo vs. Sony and Microsoft

So how does the Kyoto-based giant compare with Sony (PlayStation) and Microsoft (Xbox)? If we juxtapose the net revenues that these three companies achieved in fiscal year 2022 - 2023, we find that the supremacy belongs to Sony, who achieved a result slightly smaller than the other two combined.

  1. The PlayStation brand provided Sony with $26.791 billion in revenue.
  2. Xbox brought Microsoft $15.43 billion in revenue.
  3. Nintendo - as stated above - achieved a result of $12.042 billion.
