Mr. & Mrs. Smith Ending Explained
The new Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a wild ride, which ended after the eighth episode. We explain what happened to the characters in the series finale.
Warning: here are spoilers from the first season finale of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV show starring Maya Erskine and Donald Glover premiered on Friday, February 2, and all episodes of the production were made available on Amazon Prime Video on that day. So how did the adventure of the new, not so good spies in the first season end? What fate awaits spies after three failed missions?
At the beginning of the final episode, the couple is given a task – they have to get rid of each other. This is supposed to be Hihi's way of ending cooperation with agents who can't do their jobs well. Jane, shortly after receiving news of this new "mission," is attacked in her own home, and while she gets out alive, the same cannot be said for her cat. The woman assumes that she must have been attacked by John, who was certainly given the same task as her.
This starts a war between the spouses, which ends with Jane's capture by John. The man gives a truth serum to her and himself and after that they discover all the secrets about each other and become close to each other again, as they understand that they wouldn’t hurt each other and they care about each other. They also discover that Jane and John Smith from the fourth episode are behind the first attacks, not themselves.
It turns out that they’re agents whose job is to get rid of Smith couples that can't finish their missions or run away, which explains the opening scene of the series. The main characters manage to escape when Jane takes advantage of the other John's sneeze and shoots him. Unfortunately, although they get out, they’re not completely safe, as the first John is bleeding heavily and his life is in danger.
Did John and Jane Smith die in the first season finale?
Certainly the situation of the spies doesn’t look good. Jane confessed that she only had one bullet in her gun, while John had none. The last shot before the scene after the credits is the view of the house from outside, from which three flashes can be seen after the gunshot. As we know, Jane was only able to fire once, so the spouses' situation doesn’t look good. It's quite possible that they died at the hands of the second Jane, who might have been better prepared and had a fully loaded gun, hence the additional two gunshots from which first Jane and John might have died.
Their fate, however, is not foregone, as viewers don’t learn what exactly happened inside. In a scene after the credits, we watch a nosy neighbor of the Smiths peek into their house through a window and note with satisfaction the destruction inside. The situation takes place just a day after the fight, during which Jane and John may have been killed. However, it’s still unclear what happened to them. A neighbor played by Paul Dano notes only that it's possible that his Smiths' house may eventually be for sale.
What's the deal with Smiths' neighbor?
The character played by Paul Dano appeared several times throughout the series, mostly to the displeasure of John, who was jealous of his relationship with Jane. The woman often flirted with her neighbor.
In the last episode, John had an opportunity to look around his neighbor's house, in whose basement he found the exact plans for his own house. When John confronted the neighbor, the man explained to him that he is a real estate agent and is obsessed with finding out how the Smiths had managed to buy their house and how they had combined two historic brownstones into one. As he stated, their property is like Moby Dick to him.
So in the scene after the credits, when he peeked into the couple's house, he took no interest in finding the couple. He only said to someone on the phone that their house could finally be put up for sale due to the fact that there was damage inside and the Smiths were likely to leave it.
What are John and Jane's real names?
The final episode finally revealed what the main characters' real names are. Their real names are Michael and Alana.
