More Game Adaptations of Movies, TV Series and Comic Books. Independent Developers Are to Take Care of Their High Quality
Devolver has set up a publishing brand focusing on gaming adaptations of movies, TV series, and comic books. Big Fan Games is currently working on 6 projects.
Devolver Digital has launched a new publishing brand called Big Fan Games. It is supposed to focus on releasing licensed game adaptations based on movies, comics, or TV shows, which will be created by independent developers.
Experience in adaptations
The publisher is already said to be working with several major partners, such as Disney, Dark Horse Comics, Rebellion, and Lionsgate, and the team itself has some experience working on licensed brands. Most of Big Fan Games are employees of Good Shepherd, which published games such as John Wick Hex and Hellboy: Web of Wyrd. Devolver, on the other hand, is responsible for introducing Reigns: Game of Thrones to the market.
Just like you, we really like games. But when it comes to "licensed games", we believe there is room for a new approach where independent developers can make decisions. Take risks and explore unique ideas that are not dictated by spreadsheets. That's why we established Big Fan, to help make this dream come true.
We don't know what Big Fan currently has up its sleeve, but the people behind it have confirmed that there are as many as 6 projects in development. Considering that these will be most likely smaller productions, we shouldn't have to wait too long for them. All the more so, as the goal of the publishing company is to achieve a pace of "four or five" games a year.
Enthusiasts are the best
Interestingly, it is also important for the company to connect development teams with brands they are fans of. Such an approach can result in really interesting titles, as it is well-known that the best games are created with passion.
This is an ideal situation. When you have a programmer who is a passionate fan and part of a specific IP community, and not the other way around, when you have an IP owner who wants to build something.
In conclusion, it's worth noting that movie or comic book adaptations have been doing really well in recent years. Once they were associated with low quality and a way to make quick money. Fortunately, things are better today, and productions such as the Arkham series, Marvel's Spider-Man and Star Wars Jedi are confirmation of this.
