Minecraft Surprised With Novelty, 10-hour D&D Campaign
A collaboration between Mojang and Wizards of the Coast has resulted in an unusual product. A new game mode, inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, will come to Minecraft.
During the D&D Direct 2023 conference, centered around the popular tabletop RPG system, there was quite a surprise waiting for the audience. Minecraft will receive a new game mode, transferring elements and mechanics known from Dungeons & Dragons to the game.
Unusual combination
The new gameplay mode in Minecraft is a 10-hour campaign designed for several players. During it, participants will face numerous dangers and adversities, while the story itself will offer a variety of branching paths.
The game by Mojang will be enriched with a whole lot of elements from the popular RPG system. A new equipment system will be introduced, as well as stats known from D&D, used to describe the characters. There will also be items, character classes and the classic bestiary of the Forgotten Realms. The trailer featured, among others, a chest-like mimic, a storm giant and, finally, a powerful dragon.
In information provided to GamesRadar, representatives of Mojang and Wizards of the Coast mention a bit about the upcoming game mode:
"Dialogues with multiple options to choose from will be available, as well as the occasional dice roll. So we have D20 [the number of dice walls - ed. note], and the result will determine what the effect will be," saod Riccardo Lenzi, senior producer at Mojang
"I think their [Mojang's - ed. note] deep understanding and love for the brand will really be reflected in the game," said Tom Sargent, senior producer at Wizards of the Coast
The concept of combining a tabletop RPG system with the ability-rich, open-ended character and gameplay of Minecraft seems exceptionally apt. It remains to be hoped that the new game mode will neatly combine the two worlds into one coherent whole, which will appeal to fans of both brands.
Minecraft Dungeons & Dragons will work with the Bedrock version of the game, which means it will be played on PC, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Android and iOS devices. The exact release date of the add-on has not yet been announced..
Minecraft's bestiary in the RPG campaign
In addition to the aforementioned game mode in Minecraft, the collaboration between Mojang and Wizards of the Coast has resulted in yet another interesting concept. Several classicmobs will make a guest appearance in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
As part of a minor expansion called Monstrous Compendium Volume 3: Minecraft Creatures the following creatures will be adapted for the rules of the tabletop RPG:
- Blaze
- Creeper
- Enderman
- Borderlands Dragon
- Wolf
Eager dungeon masters will be able to use the materials prepared by the developers to surprise players with an unusual bestiary.
A set of creatures, specially prepared for the rules of D&D will be available for free on the D&D Beyond platform.
