A few days ago we've seen the releas of the full version of Jupiter Hell, a turn-based roguelike game expanding the ideas from the F2P game DoomRL. We've been waiting a long time for this release - six years since the first announcement and almost two years since the early access edition debuted on Steam Early Access. Players' patience has been rewarded, as the first reviews indicate that the Wroclaw-based ChaosForge studio has prepared a real gem.
First of all, the game evokes admiration from the players. On Steam, as many as 95% of user reviews from the last 30 days are praising the title, which the service categorizes as "overwhelmingly positive" reception. It is worth noting that when counting all the player notes the average is 93%, which means that edition 1.0 was liked even more than already highly rated early access version.
Jupiter Hell was also warmly received by industry media. On Metacritic, the game has an average rating of 80%. Below are sample review scores:
Jupiter Hell reviews
- God is a Geek - 9.0/10
- IGN Italia - 8.1/10
- Noisy Pixel - 8/10
- The Games Machine - 7.7/10
- Evereye.it - 7.3/10
Reviewers mostly praise the great gameplay mechanics, which are easy to learn but also offer a lot of depth. The game is quite challenging, which helps to keep the players on their toes.
High praise also goes to the execution, especially the excellent soundtrack and the atmosphere-enhancing graphics, whose interesting elements include effects (such as image bending) that simulate CRT screens. The main criticism is the small variety of enemies.
The roots of the project go back to the free game DoomRL, which translated the basic premise of idSoftware's FPS series to turn-based roguelike. Under the threat of a lawsuit from Bethesda, the authors were forced to change the name of the project to DRL. However, it kept the previous vibe, and Jupiter Hell also does not leave many doubts as to what was the main source of inspiration.
Version 1.0 of Jupiter Hell was released on August 5 this year exclusively on PC. On this occasion, a specila offer was organized on Steam and GOG.com, which enables us to buy the game with a 20% discount. The promotion will last until August 15.
