Julia Roberts Thought She Would “Go to Hell” Because of The Things She Did to Meryl Streep in This 2013 Movie
Julia Roberts was thrilled to have the opportunity to star in one film with Meryl Streep, but she did such things in this movie that she felt like she should “go to hell” for them.
Acting alongside Meryl Streep was a dream come true for Julia Roberts. The actress was thrilled to have the opportunity to appear with her in one movie, which she talked about in two interviews, but in one she stressed that she had imagined their collaboration differently. Or rather, the production in which they would come to appear on screen together.
I thought we’d be together, having tea and speaking in fabulous accents, all dressed up – Julia Roberts for The Telegraph.
The actresses starred together in the film August: Osage County, which takes a look at the lives of the strong women of the Weston family. Their paths diverged until a family crisis brought them back to the home they grew up in, and consequently to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.
To work with Meryl Streep is a dream come true for anyone. To know her is an honour. She is such a beautiful person, and it was intimidating, certainly, to be in these scenes with her – Julia Roberts, during an interview with Yahoo, talked about working with Meryl Streep.
However, although Roberts got her chance to play alongside Streep, she didn't like the way she had to treat the actress in her role. Their characters weren’t fond of each other and the things Roberts had to do to Streep for the movie were difficult for her and made her feel like a "terrible person." As she stated in an interview with Yahoo: „Choking her and things like that were not how I pictured it going in my mind all these years”.
Attacking her physically was… just… awful. I felt like a terrible person who would truly go to hell. I might actually go to hell now; I’ve attacked her so many times – Roberts confessed in an interview with The Telegraph.
Despite the difficulty Julia Roberts must have had to play these scenes, she performed them perfectly. So did Meryl Streep. Both actresses were praised for their performances, and for how they showed the conflict on screen.
