“I'm Going to Call the Police.” Christopher Reeve Was Forced by Threats to Leave the Smallville Set
Christopher Reeve made a guest appearance on Smallville and liked it so much on the set that he refused to leave it. As a result, he was even threatened with the police.
Christopher Reeve is one of the best and most beloved actors of Superman, who is still regarded as a role model for the character. The last time he played the role was in the 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, however, he remained an iconic figure in the world of comic book screen adaptations. As a result, many years later he was invited to guest star in the TV series Smallville, which focused on the life of a young Clark Kent. In it, Reeve played Dr. Virgil Swann, who was the first person to tell Clark that he came from Krypton.
It was a special event not only for Superman fans or even the cast of the TV series, but for Reeve himself, who liked it so much on the Smallville set that he objected to the nurse who was taking care of him because he wanted to stay longer on the set. The nurse had to go so far as to threaten to take the actor off the set.
Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent in Smallville, returned to those memories during a panel at New York Comic Con (via EW).
He was only supposed to be there for three hours, but I think he stayed for like six and a half. He was like, “I don't want to leave”. The idea was he would shoot all his coverage, then he was going to leave and I would shoot all my stuff with someone else. But he wanted to stay with me! It got to the point where his nurse said to him, “I'm going to call the police.” He's like, “on who?” She's like, “On you! You're done, you can't be here anymore!” He just wanted to be there. It turned out great, and the story was fantastic.
Despite his reluctance, Reeve eventually left the set, and the Smallville episode featuring him is one of the special ones. Also for Tom Welling, who, as he confessed in the TalkVille podcast, got Reeves' blessing as the next Superman.
