“I Wasn’t Enjoying It”. Dwight Schrute's Actor Has Been Unhappy Working in The Office for Years
Rainn Wilson confessed in a candid conversation that for years he was unable to enjoy working in The Office.
The Office is undoubtedly one of the cult sitcoms. The American version conquered the world and promoted the actors appearing in it. Or at least some of them, according to Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute in The Office and, like Dakota Johnson, was not necessarily happy with his work.
While being a guest on the Club Random podcast, Wilson complained that The Office didn't help his career as much as he might have hoped (via Variety). The actor explained that because of this, he was unable to feel satisfaction from his own work in the hit sticom, as all along he had dreamed of a film career on the scale of Jack Black or Will Ferrell, but that seemed out of his reach.
When I was in The Office, I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn’t enough. I’m realizing now, like, I’m on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money, working with Steve Carell and Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski and these amazing writers and incredible directors like Paul Feig. I’m on one of the great TV shows. People love it. I wasn’t enjoying it. I was thinking about, ”Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell? How come I can’t have a movie career? Why don’t I have this development deal?”
Wilson tried to convince himself that he had already achieved some success, but despite earning hundreds of thousands and being part of a TV hit, it still wasn't enough for him. He yearned for something more, however, he failed to achieve it.
When I was on The Office, I was clutching and grasping at, okay, I was making hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions, and I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough. Humans have lived for hundreds of thousands of years, and “never enough” has helped us as a species.
Since The Office ended, Rainn Wilson has appeared in many TV series and movies, however, the actor is still waiting for that big breakthrough in his career that would make him a big movie star, something he has been dreaming about for years. However, it can't be said that Wilson's career is unsuccessful, as he has no shortage of roles all the time, and when he does appear on screen, he very often steals scenes.
