“I had half a mind to buy it.” Macaulay Culkin was close to buying a Home Alone house, but one thing stopped him
Macaulay Culkin confessed that he considered buying the famous house in Winnetka from Home Alone, but had to give up the idea.
Macaulay Culkin's most famous role is that of Kevin in Home Alone. The child protagonist, who single-handedly dealt with two burglars in the hilarious holiday comedy that Christmas can't happen without, fought in a house that has become downright iconic. Viewers around the world can easily recognize the huge McCallister house.
The house, located in Winnetka, Illinois, was put up for sale in May 2024, a fact that did not escape Culkin, who took an interest in the property, with which his career and childhood are linked. The actor recently attended the Home Alone show at Illinois' Rosemont Theater, and during the show revealed that he was considering buying the iconic home, which he would turn into a “movie fun house” (via The New York Times).
I had half a mind to buy it – just for giggles.
Why didn't he do it? Culkin gave a pretty simple reason, he has a family, two children and no time for such projects, so he opted out of buying a house in Winnetka.
I got kids. I'm busy, man.
The famous house in Winnetka, which was put up for sale for $5.25 million, was sold in June. It had been on the real estate market for only a week.
Macaulay Culkin participated in the A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin project, through which he traveled to various cities for Home Alone screenings and Q&A sessions with himself. As part of these events, he was happy to answer questions and talk about his experiences and approach to the films that brought him fame. As he revealed, although they used to be a kind of “a curse and a blessing” for him, his approach to them has now changed due to fatherhood.
I look at the movie differently now because of that. I watch it through a different lens — I watch it with them. And they have no idea who they're sitting next to.
The actor is currently nostalgic about Home Alone, the films he now relives with his children, as he has mentioned in interviews.
