Modern Family was a hit sitcom that focused on the adventures of three different but related families. One of them was the Pritchett family, which included a married couple with a big age gap. The couple was played by Sofia Vergara and Ed O'Neill.

When Vergara joined the cast of Modern Family and heard who would play her husband, she was surprised and had a lot of concerns about what her days on set would be like. The actress wasn't convinced by the idea, because to her it meant that she would be bored. She shared this story when she was a guest on the Hart to Heart podcast.

I used to watch Ed O’Neill when I was in Colombia so it was like I couldn’t believe it, and I was married to Ed O’Neill who was like 20 years older than me, I’m like, “Oh my God!” I remember the first that they told me he was going to be, you know, my husband, and I’m like, “Oh my God, I am going to be stuck with the old guy in the set for hours and it’s going to be so boring” and it was complete opposite.

Sofia Vergara admitted that despite her initial misgivings, her time on the set of the TV show with Ed O'Neill was enjoyable and she had fun with him. On The Ellen Show, she also confessed that she “loves going to work with him,” with which she further emphasized how different her experience on set of Modern Family was from what she had initially anticipated.

And their good relationship on set was reflected in how they played a couple together in Modern Family. Fans of the sitcom loved Gloria and Jay.
