Huawei Aiming to Enter GPU Market?
Huawei is recruiting employees for the new department, whose task will be to build server graphics cards. These may be one of the last elements for China to achieve technological independence.
The Elec reported that Huawei will try to enter the server GPU market, which has been dominated by AMD and Nvidia for years. The company has opened a new subsidiary in South Korea, which employs former Nvidia Corporation employees. It should be noted that already last year it created a device that in many ways resembles a graphics card, but is not used for displaying graphics. The Huawei Atlas 300 is an AI accelerator based on the Ascend 310 chip. Now, the Chinese manufacturer has released an even more powerful Ascend 910, which may suggest a desire for a series of server GPUs.
There is at least one reason why Huawei wants to enter the GPU market. The Chinese government has announced that it will replace all hardware and software in public and government institutions by 2022. However, the new technology is not to come from the West - all components and systems are to be ordered from domestic manufacturers, so Huawei's efforts could be linked to the state's plan for technological independence. Recall that China has been supporting IT companies for years and already has native manufacturers of operating systems, motherboards and processors. If Huawei manages to create a competitive GPU for servers, the company will be able to expand its offer to the consumer market as well.
As we know, the Chinese have no shortage of enthusiasm or resources to enter a new market. If the corporation uses the talent of its engineers and resources, the new GPUs can challenge the designs of other manufacturers.
