Not so long ago, Dark and Darker has returned to Steam as a free-to-play game. With the reintroduction of the title to the platform, the matchmaking system has changed. This may cause some confusion among players. From this guide you will learn exactly how it works.

How Matchmaking Works in Dark and Darker

Matchmaking in Dark and Darker works on simple rules - it matches players based on their gear score which is an indicator of how good equipment you wear. The better items you have, the higher the points value is.

Unfortunately, many people don’t like the new system. The situation is so bad that numerous players wonder if matchmaking actually exists. This confusion is due to the strangely low gear score limit which is only 25 points. If you look at the tables compiling equipment values, you will notice how low the number is. For example, uncommon one-handed main weapon alone exceeds the limit.

If your gear score is lower than 25 points you will meet people who have similar equipment. According to the developers, it’s supposed to resemble previous Normal mode. However, if your gear value is above 25, you can stumble upon powerful enemies with multiple times better equipment, as there are no additional matchmaking tiers.

Moreover, if you have Legendary Status, you also have access to the more difficult High-Roller Dungeons. There are no matchmaking rules and you can meet literally anyone in this mode.
