Half-Life with Ray Tracing; the Fan-made Project Will Launch This Year
We've recently received trailers of two impressive mods for Half-Life. One of them replaces Gordon Freeman with Spyro. The other will introduce ray tracing to the game.
Despite being 24 years old, the first installment of Half-Life still holds up quite well. Players constantly receive new modifications, which diversify the gameplay. One of them - Signal Lost - was even placed on the list of the best mods of 2021 according to the ModDB community. Recently, we got the trailers of two new projects. One of them introduces ray tracing into the game, and the second changes the character model of the protagonist.
Half-Life: Ray Traced is being developed by a Russian modder known as sultim_t. He showcased the results of his work on YouTube. The mod is expected to launch later this year.
This is an ambitious project, which was based on another mod. It involved migrating ray tracing support from Vulkan to Xash3D, which is the engine used for creating Half-Life mods.
Half-Life: Year of the Dragon, on the other hand, is a modification that changes Gordon Freeman into Spyro - a small purple dragon, who is the protagonist of the popular series of platform games. Interestingly enough, it also implements all the creature's moves. This means that you can e.g. charge at the enemies.
This mod was released in early access back in 2018, but has been significantly improved since. Its current state is presented in the video below.
