Godzilla vs Kong Goes on a Rampage in Theaters and Earns Millions

The long-awaited blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong finally hit the theaters and has become an undeniable financial success when we consider the difficult times we live in for the film industry.

Unfortunately, in 2021 it is not the norm to discuss the financial results of movie premieres, as many cinemas around the world are simply closed. Fortunately there is such a thing as the Chinese market, which has been doing especially well lately and does not complain about the coronavirus. In fact, a few days ago Avatar reappeared in Chinise cinemas, which made it the highest-grossing film in the history of cinematography.

And this weekend has seen some really good box office results, all thanks to the premiere of the hit Godzilla vs. Kong. Variety reports that the production has already earned $70 million and that's just in China. We're talking about 82% of all Far East box office earnings from this past weekend. The film's total score is $121 million earned in the 28 countries where it premiered.

Christopher Nolan can look at Godzilla vs Kong with envy. His Tenet earned $8.7 million on its opening day, while Wingard's film more than doubled it, scoring $20.9 million (we're still talking China only).

And what about the U.S. release of a work about the clash of the two mighty kaiju? Well, we'll have to wait a few more days, until March 31. That's when Western audiences will be able to add their bit to the film's already impressive, considering the times we live in, overall box office performance.

On the international box office scene, the new Godzilla is followed by a less obvious production, namely Nobody, an action film starring Bob Odenkirk. This one earneda total of 11.7 million, which just goes to show how huge the disparity is between GvK and the rest of the stakes.
