Godzilla vs Kong Breaks Pandemic Record
The director of Godzilla vs. Kong has thanked for the film's excellent performance. It turned out to be the biggest theatrical success since the beginning of the pandemic and broke the viewing record on HBO Max.
Adam Wingard, the director of Godzilla vs. Kong, thanked the audience for the movie's success. He said that he was deeply touched by the fact that his work is helping cinemas to recover.
Within two weeks from its premiere the movie earned $285.4 million worldwide. This is the highest score achieved by a film during the on-gping pandemic. The amount is all the more impressive because the movied is also available at no extra charge to HBO Max subscribers.
Prior to the release, many in the film industry feared that releasing Warner Bros. movies simultaneously in streaming and on the big screen in 2021 would hurt the return of cinemas to profitability (last year proved to be particularly tough). That's why Godzilla vs. Kong's box-office success is a good thing.
It's worth noting that the previous installment in the series, Godzilla : King of the Monsters, earned $386 million in theaters. The final result of Godzilla vs. Kong will probably turn out to be higher, which is a great achievement considering the current situation.
However, the film's theatrical success doesn't mean that the streaming release was a flop. Quite the contrary. Godzilla vs. Kong broke HBO Max's viewing records, outperforming Zack Snyder's Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984.
The success of the film makes the creation of another installment of the so-called MonsterVerse seem obvious, but licensing issues may stand in the way. The owner of the rights to Godzilla is the Japanese company Toho and the contract with New Line for using this monster in American films expired in 2020. So we hope that after the success of Godzilla vs. Kong a new contract will be signed.
