Ghost of Tsushima Breaks Record Set by Horizon: Zero Dawn

Ghost of Tsushima has become the best digital debut of a new IP in the history of Sony. The game sells much faster than Horizon: Zero Dawn and Days Gone.

Ghost of Tsushima did well.

The SuperData analytics group published a report summarizing the results of the video game market for the previous month. Thanks to this, we learned that in terms of revenues, Ghost of Tsushima was the largest digital release of the period. In July, 1.9 million copies of Sucker Punchh's latest gamer were purchased in digital distribution.

This is a record for a new PlayStation exclusive IP. For comparison, Horizon: Zero Dawn took two months to reach 1.9 million copies, and Days Gone could boast 1.3 million copies after 60 days on the market.

Analysts emphasize that Sony's exclusives have benefited strongly from the coronavirus. Usually, the middle of the year is not a good time, as people can pick from many forms of entertainment. It's different in 2020, which has translated into excellent sales results. This was also seen in June. At that time the digital leader was The Last of Us: Part II, which found 2.4 million buyers in digital distribution in the month of its release.

Superdata's report also contains some other interesting information. Paper Mario: The Origami King, whose digital sales exceeded 550 thousand copies, turned out to be a great success. This result pales, however, in comparison with that achieved by Animal Crossing: New Horizons (5 million) and Pokemon Sword/Pokemon Shield (2.7 million), but the game is still selling faster than Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which debuted in July last year.

Pokemon GO, for which last month was the second best in history, is also doing very well. What's more, the game's revenues were only 0.4% lower than in August 2016, when the game was a global phenomenon. This was despite the fact that the number of users is now only 16% of that peak popularity.

It is also worth noting the success of Garena Free Fire, a battle royale shooter, which became the third best-earning mobile game.
