Fortnite's New Event Features the Speech of Martin Luther King Jr
Fortnite does not cease to surprise. Another well-known figure who appeared in the battle royale game is Martin Luther King Jr. His presence is associated with the event „March through time”.
Who were you expecting to see next in Fortnite? Certainly not Martin Luther King Jr., the famous Baptist pastor and leader of the civil rights movement, who in the 1960s actively campaigned for equal rights for African-Americans and the abolition of racial discrimination, which led to his assassination. I hasten to reassure you that this Nobel Peace Prize winner will not be a playable character - at least for now. Instead, Epic Games is offering the just-launched "March Through Time" event, which enables fans of the battle royale to learn (more) about King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech, as well as the history surrounding it.
Above you can watch the trailer for the event. It takes fans to a location inspired by the 1963 Washington, D.C., march of the Civil Rights Movement. So you can listen to the aforementioned speech of Martin Luther King Jr. "live", but there's also plenty of curiosity-packed, museum-style landmarks and mini-games. Completing individual challenges provides loot in the form of, among other things, a graffiti "D.C. 63”.
The action was born in cooperation between Epic Games and Time, DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, and the Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr. Its genesis was supposed to be last year's death of George Floyd, which triggered a wave of protests by the Black Lives Matter movement. Interestingly, around that time, Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney compared his company's fight against the Apple corporation to the civil rights movement.
The main goal of the "March Through Time" event is to educate the players. So the idea seems worthy of attention. The question is, whether exactly Fortnite is the right title to advertise this kind of knowledge?
