XCOMesque Marvel Game Will Probably Use Superheroes Created by Players
The latest rumors suggest that the turn-based game set in the Marvel universe by Firaxis will not enable us to command well-known superheroes. Players will create their own heroes instead.
For several months there have been rumors about a new game from Firaxis, which is supposed to combine turn-based gameplay in the style of XCOM with Marvel's comic book universe. The latest reports suggest that the game won't enable us to control any well-known superheroes. Most likely we'll take command over a squad of new heroes created by us.
This information is very surprising, but its source is the reliable journalist Jeff Grubb. He revealed it during the Giant Bomb podcast. It's only available to subscribers, but VGC summarized the most important facts from this broadcast.
According to Grubb, despite the lack of known superheroes in the player's squad, the game will be firmly rooted in the Marvel universe, drawing heavily on the comic books released by this publishing house. Interestingly enough, the game is to focus on the mystical / supernatural side of the universe, and among the enemies we will see vampires. Following the example of the XCOM series we will get a lot of freedom to develop characters' abilities and modify their appearance.
Until the official announcement, all this information should be approached with caution. Fortunately, we shouldn't wait long for the details. Recently Take-Two Interactive, owner of Firaxis, informed that this month it will reveal "a new exciting IP" and almost certainly it's the said Marvel game. The most natural moment for this seems to be this year's edition of Gamescom, which starts on August 25.
The lack of known superheroes seems to be an interesting, but a bit risky idea. A decade ago a similar solution was used in X-Men: Destiny by Silicon Knights, where we were in charge of new original mutants, created specifically for this title. This project turned out to be a big flop, but it was due to its overall poor quality. Firaxis Games is not in the habit of creating such failures.
