Fall and Scratch-resistant Smartphones? Maybe With Gorilla Glass Victus

Corning presented Gorilla Glass Victus - a new version of glass used to make smartphone screens. The manufacturer ensures that this time we can expect exceptional resistance to both falls from heights and minor scratches.

Gorilla Glass Victus will also be scratch resistant.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Corning presented a new version of its glass, Gorilla Glass Victus;
  2. The screens of phones using this technology are to be resistant to both small scratches and falls from about two meters.

Corning has introduced a new version of its damage resistant glass - Gorilla Glass Victus. According to the manufacturer, the phone using it will be able to withstand a fall from two meters. What's more, the surface of Gorilla Glass Victus is to be twice as scratch-resistant as Gorilla Glass 6. Below we will find a video presenting the most important advantages of this technology.

“Dropped phones can result in broken phones, but as we developed better glasses, phones survived more drops but also showed more visible scratches, which can impact the usability of devices. Instead of our historic approach of asking our technologists to focus on a single goal – making the glass better for either drop or scratch – we asked them to focus on improving both drop and scratch, and they delivered with Gorilla Glass Victus," said John Bayne, senior vice president and general manager at Corning.

Of course, Gorilla Glass Victus is not indestructible and ultimately a lot will depend on how we drop our phone. The way in which manufacturers use this technology may also be of great importance - in talks with Corning one of the companies said that Gorilla Glass Victus is so much better than Gorilla Glass 6 that a thinner layer is being considered.

In the first place, the technology will be used in the smartphones of Korean company Samsung, but it can be expected that it will also be used in the flagship models of other large companies.
