Epic Takes over Rocket League Creators. Will the Game Disappear from Steam?
Psyonix Studio has been taken over by Epic Games. So far, Rocket League hasn't disappeared from the Steam. That didn't prevent players from flooding the site with negative reviews of the game, probably just in case.
- Psyonix has been taken over by Epic Games,
- The Rocket League will go to the Epic Games Store,
- No decision has yet been taken concerning removal of the game from Steam,
- The Steam edition will always be supported, even if it disappears from Valve's store.
Known for its hit Rocket League, Psyonix has announced that it has been acquired by Epic Games. The transaction is to be finalized at the end of May/beginning of June. How much Epic had payed wasn't disclosed.
The Rocket League is scheduled to appear on the Epic Games Store at the end of the year. The creators emphasized that the game is still available on Steam and will always be supported on that platform. No plans to remove the production from Valve's offer have been announced yet, and it's not actually certain that it will ever happen. Even if it will, the owners of the game that use Steam will still receive all updates.
Psyonix developers have assured that joining Epic Games will benefit the Rocket League, as they will receive additional funds for the development of the game.
Such statement didn't reassure all the players - when they heard about the acquisition, they review-bombed the game on Steam. The operation was pretty intense, as the game's opinion from the last 30 days is now "mixed", with only 52% of the ratings being positive.
Valve has recently announced that in such cases, periods with reviews of this type will not be taken into account for overall ratings, unless the user decides otherwise in Steam settings. This mechanism recently improved the average rating of the Borderlands series, and we expect things to be similar for Rocket League.
Rocket League debuted on PC and PlayStation 4 in July 2015. In February 2016, we saw the conversion to Xbox One, and in November 2017, the game went to Nintendo Switch. Both Epic and the creators of the popular racing game assure that the takeover of Psyonix will in no way affect the console releases of the game.
