Economy 2.0 in Cities: Skylines 2 Is Around The Corner. Prepare for Small Apocalypse in Old Cities
Cities: Skylines 2 will soon receive a major update. Keep in mind, however, that cities from old saves may face many misfortunes before they adapt to Economy 2.0.
A patch revolutionizing the economy in Cities: Skylines 2 it's just around the corner. Colossal Order Studio is close to releasing an update that will introduce what is known as Economy 2.0. The patch may be released as soon as tomorrow, provided there are no delays (via Steam).
We have previously discussed the changes planned by the developer in earlier news, but to summarize: the update will extensively overhaul the entire economy, such as removing government subsidies, altering the method of rent calculation, and balancing production chains. Furthermore, there will be revisions to the education system and the expansion of buildings.
Wave of death and global crisis
The developer has already cautioned that revisions will also be applied to the existing virtual cities, although this may take some time due to the number of changes. This is confirmed by the new Colossal Order post, in which the devs have published a list of CS 2 elements, which will need a longer time to adapt to Economy 2.0.
Some changes will be noticeable right away, such as the elimination of government grants and increased maintenance costs for municipal services. However, the game will need significantly more time to implement the remaining ones. There will be an unavoidable wave of deaths lasting 1-2 months, along with potential rise in unemployment, mass relocations, and financial issues.
All of these catastrophes (as pointed out by malicious players simulating a global crisis) will be the result of changes in Economy 2.0. Companies in the game will need time to adapt to changes in production chains, and the new way of calculating the needs of virtual residents may prompt many of them to change their place of residence. The developers also hope that the "help" after the update will prevent further waves of death in the future.
Just like after previous developer diaries, players are showing cautious enthusiasm. Yes, the devs gained approval from the players for the detailed discussion of changes and their impact on existing saved game states. However, only after the premiere of Economy 2.0 will we see whether this great update will be a big step towards making CS 2 finally a worthy successor to the original Cities: Skylines.
