EA Announces the End of Origin

Electronic Arts is changing the name of its platform, which was a competition for Steam. It will no longer be called Origin, instead the app will simply be named EA.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Origin changes its name to "EA", confirms Mike Blank, deputy head of Player Network at EA.

Origin, a digital distribution platform from Electronic Arts, will soon cease to exist. But it doesn't disappear completely - it's just a name change. Instead of "Origin" on the desktop we'll simply see the "EA" application. This is probably the next step in the process initiated by renaming the subscription from "Origin Access" to "EA Play".

That's what Mike Blank, the Vice President of the Player Network in Electronic Arts told GamesIndustry in a recent interview. Speaking about the rebranding of the application, he said that its goal is to:

"Create a more frictionless, fast, socially-oriented experience for our players, where it becomes the best place for them to connect with the people they want to play with in the games they want to play."

The Origin platform has been created to provide Electronic Arts games with a separate location and to establish a competitive service to Steam. However, after many years, EA changed their approach, which resulted in launching game's sales on Valve's platform. Since we can already buy EA games there, we expected some modifications in Origin. I don't know if the change of name is what the players expected, but the more important thing is the access to the games already in the account and the store offer.

So far, there is no information about any changes to the content of accounts migrating from Origin to "EA". This is just a rebranding, so I guess we have nothing to worry about. Soon we will simply log in to an application with a different name. I hope that the new, fresh name will also bring better quality of service and more games.
