Dungeons 4 Getting Flagged as Malware or Virus
Nowadays everyone is at risk of getting infected by malware. Dungeons 4 is flagged by virus by many antivirus programs. Is it safe to play? We have analysed this situation.
Dungeons 4 is a spiritual successor of the legendary Dungeon Keeper series. The developers from Realmforge Studios encouraged by the success of the previous game in their Dungeons cycle have just recently released its 4th part. Some fans who wanted to jump into the new production might have been unpleasantly surprised by their antivirus software flagging the game as a virus or malware. If you are worried that this title can be a malicious program, we are here with an explanation that may shed some light on this situation.
Is Dungeons 4 malware or a virus?
There have been reports of players trying to launch Dungeons 4 stating that it has triggered their antivirus software. Many fans concerned about this have exchanged their fears on the title’s Community Hub on Steam. The game has been flagged as malicious software by Norton, Malwarebytes, Avast, and Microsoft Defender.
The case was so serious, that it was officially addressed in separate topic by the developers. They claim that this is a false positive (a situation where harmless application is mistakenly treated by antivirus as malware). The creators’ advice is to add d4.exe (game’s executable) to exceptions list as well as any other file that triggers the antivirus.
Not all players are convinced by that explanation declaring that they will refund Dungeons 4. It is a good habit to be very cautious about cybersecurity, though it is not uncommon for games to get flagged as potentially unwanted software. Similar situation happened with free to play title Synced in September, where it was also triggering players’ antivirus programs.
Steam is a reputable store and though uploading malicious software there is not impossible, it would be highly unlikely as it would probably result in an immediate action from the platform owners and lawsuits in its extreme form. Additionally, Realmforge Studios has been creating the series since 2011, which means that they are already well known in the community and their credibility is high.
Since the problem with Dungeons 4 has already been noticed by the developers, we may expect an official solution soon. If you would like to give the game a shot, yet you are concerned about your security, you may want to wait till it’s fixed.
