Driftland: The Magic Revival – first details on a new Unreal 4-based strategy game
Driftland: The Magic Revival is an ambitious project by Polish studio Stardrifters. The game will combine features of 4X and RTS set in a fantasy world made up of scattered islands. The player will become a powerful mage and struggle to expand his realm.
Last year we wrote about an ambitious project by Polish studio Stardrifters started by a co-founder of CI Games (Lords of the Fallen). They intended to create an original game directed to fans of strategy genre that would actually become the next big franchise, like Civilization. The project is Driftland: The Magic Revival and it is a PC/Mac cross between 4X and real-time strategy game set in a fantasy world that became fragmented after a devastating war between the mightiest mages and only held together by a powerful magic.
The player becomes a mage overlord with his own castle, tower, and a small realm on one of the planets islands. His task is to explore the procedurally generated world and expand his kingdom by adjoining more and more islands together. Interestingly, gameplay will focus on giving out major orders and setting goals, instead of micromanagement of each unit. Speaking of units, there will be some classical representatives of fantasy genre, such us warriors, archers and mages, but they will be able to mount different types of flying beasts, resulting in unique combinations.
Driftland: The Magic Revival is going to offer both single player campaign and multiplayer. The game’s visuals are based on Unreal Engine 4, but are not leaning toward realism, instead being slightly cartoonish with hand-drawn textures. According to the developer’s early expectations, the project should release in fall 2016, but it hasn’t beenconfirmed since last year.
