Doom Eternal Earns Millions Without Lootboxes or Microtransactions

Doom Eternal is a huge success for Bethesda. This was confirmed by a former id Software employee, according to whom the game generated over 450 million dollars in revenue in 9 months, despite the lack of lootboxes and microtransactions.

Reports from publishers and analysts leave no doubt - microtransactions and live-service game based on them are a gold mine that makes traditional games look pale. However, from time to time we also hear about the success of single-player titles without such inventions. The reported success of Doom Eternal, for example, which Bethesda boasted right after the release. David Saunders' profile on LinkedIn (via Reddit) also testifies to the game's great sales (the game itself being appreciated by reviewers). Former id Software employee claims that in 9 months, the latest Doom generated over 450 million dollars in revenue. This would confirm information provided by the SuperData analyst group earlier this year.

While this is an excellent result, Doom Eternal is still far from the revenues generated by popular free-to-play titles, for example. If SuperData's report is to be believed, in 2020 id Software's work was also far behind many premium games, such as Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA 21, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Cyberpunk 2077 and - of course - the Call of Duty series.

However, one can't help but notice that, aside from CD Projekt RED's game, all of the titles that surpassed the latest Doom featured microtransactions or lootboxes that it lacked. The only incentive to spend more was the season pass and The Ancient Gods DLC. Doom Eternal is further proof that games without microtransactions can still be profitable for publishers. Whether earning more than 450 million dollars in 9 months is really a sufficient argument, since even the much older GTA V exceeded this result twice thanks to Grand Theft Auto Online is another matter.
