Microsoft Wants to Acquire Discord for $10 Billion
There are reports on the web that Microsoft is negotiating the acquisition of Discord. The offer is expected to exceed 10 billion dollars.
- Discord is in talks that could result in the website's acquisition;
- Possible buyers include, among others, Microsoft, which is expected to offer more than 10 billion dollars;
- However, it is possible that Discord will decide to go public instead.
For some time there have been rumors that Microsoft is preparing for more large acquisitions of companies in the gaming industry. Most people expected that these will be some publishers, but it turns out that the Redmond giant may also take over Discord.
The matter was first reported by Bloomberg. According to its sources, talks about Discord's acquisition have been conducted for some time. Several companies are trying to do so and Microsoft is one of the major candidates to take over the service. The company's offer is supposed to exceed 10 billion dollars. Negotiations are still ongoing and we should not expect them to be finalized soon.
This information was obtained by Bloomberg editors from several people closely associated with both companies, but the sources wish to remain anonymous. What is interesting, however, one of the informants said that the acquisition may not be finalized at all, because the more likely scenario is Discord's debut on the stock exchange.
The fact that many potential buyers are vying for the acquisition is not surprising. Discord is very popular and can boast over 100 million users per month. For some time, the company has been trying to expand beyond the gaming industry to make the service a general communication platform.
Also, the amount of over $10 billion is not surprising. Last year Discord raised $100 million from investors for further development. The service was worth $7 billion at the time.
Interestingly, according to Bloomberg's sources, talks about the acquisition in the past were also conducted with Epic Games and Amazon, but it seems that nothing came out of them.
As you may remember, last year Microsoft took over, for $ 7.5 billion, Zenimax Media, which includes, among others, Bethesda Softworks. This alone proves that Microsoft has no problems with investing large amounts in the gaming industry.
