Destiny 3 Not Coming; We'll Get DLCs for Destiny 2 Instead

Bungie announced that they have abandoned their plans to develop Destiny 3. Instead, the team will be developing Destiny 2 over the next few years, with plans for three expansions and restoration of some elements from the first installment. In addition, D2 will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light will be released in September

Bungie revealed plans to develop Destiny 2 in the coming years. These include not only new expansions, but also the removal of parts of old content from the game.

Cancelation of Destiny 3; Destiny 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X

First of all, Bungie decided to drop Destiny 3. The players didn't like the devs abandoning the first installment in the past and the creators want to avoid repeating this disappointment. Therefore, instead of developing the third part, developers will continue to develop Destiny 2.

Earlier reports have also been confirmed, announcing that the second part of the serieswill appear on next-gen consoles. Importantly, purchases made in Destiny 2 on Xbox One will be moved to Xbox Series X. The same will apply to the releases on PlayStation 4 and PS5.

Destiny 2 Between 2020 and 2022: three expansions and more

Schedule of expansions:
  1. Destiny 2: Beyond Light - September 22, 2020
  2. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen - 2021
  3. Destiny 2: Lightfall - 2022

Bungie also revealed what to expect over the next few years. The three big expansions are the most important element here. The first is Destiny 2: Beyond Light, which will debut on September 22, this year.

The expansion will enable us to visit Europe, one of the moons of Jupiter, where we will face the empire of the new Fallen faction. The key role in the plot will be played by a force known as Darkness and the pyramid-shaped ships representing it.

Apart from new locations and adventures, Beyond Light will also offer an additional raid, in which a six-person team will explore an underground crypt. In addition, players will be able to take advantage of the power of Stasis, associated with Darkness, in which each character class will gain different abilities.

The next two expansions are to appear in annual intervals. In 2021 we will play Destiny 2: The Witch Queen and a year later Destiny 2: Lightfall will be released.

Content Vault, or Streamlining Game Content

The fans were less enthusiastic about the announcement of removing significant parts of the game's content. Bungie explains that Destiny 2 is getting too big. Currently, during the installation of the game, the players have to download about 115 GB of files, and patches are getting bigger and bigger. That's why the devs have decided to remove some of the elements so that the game takes up less disk space. This is also to facilitate the creation of updates and reduce the number of technical errors.

The so-called Content Vault was invented for this purpose. Removed elements, as well as everything offered by the first game, will be placed there. Unfortunately, players will not get access to these attractions. Instead, Bungie will periodically pull various things out of the Vault and bring them back into the game in changed form.

We already know what first changes will be introduced within this system. On September 22, the locations of Io, Titan, Mercury, Mars and Leviathan will disappear from the game. This will include not only maps, but also campaigns, adventures and all activities. However, the items they offer will be available in other ways.

The loss of this content should be partially compensated for by the addition of elements from Destiny 1 to the game, also on September 22. Among them will be Cosmodrome, although initially it will not contain everything it offered in the first part. Missing elements will be added later, and the whole will be expanded to give more spotlight to the origin story of the Guardians.

On September 22, the Will of Crota, a Strike challenge from the first Destiny, will also be added to the game. In the following months it will be followed by The Devil's Lair and Fallen S.A.B.E.R. In total, by the end of the 13th season, the Cosmodrome is to be expanded to the level we experienced in the first game

Moreover, in the fourth year of Destiny 2's development (which will start in September 2020) we are to receive Vault of Glass, the first raid from Destiny 1. In addition, Gambit and Gambit Prime modes will be merged into one game mode.

Launch of Season of Arrivals

Finally, it's worth mentioning that yesterday the so-called Season of Arrivals started in the game, which enriched Destiny 2 with a substantial set of new content.

Season of Arrivals offers a new dungeon, additional items and public events. In the upcoming weeks, further elements will be added, mainly related to Darkness and Pyramid Ships.
