DayZ developer brewing an AAA multiplayer game

Dean “Rocket” Hall and his studio Rocketwerkz are working on a triple-A multiplayer game - and no, this isn't Ion. For now, the developer is stingy on details, but promises that the project will be an innovative one.

DayZ creator, Dean “Rocket” Hall, and his studio Rocketwerkz are working on another big game, something other than the space MMO Ion. This new project is currently shrouded in mystery – there are no details, or even a title for that matter, other than the information that this is going to be a triple-A online game with the goal of “carving out new territory in terms of new multiplayer genres, or re-purposing different parts of other genres”, Hall told Eurogamer. He also added:

I believe it’s a gap in the market. For that reason I’m going to be pretty coy about exact specifics of it – also because of expectations and how experimental we are at the moment. I need to be deliberately coy; I need to avoid a kind of War Z situation.

Where does an indie studio find money for a project like this? A Chinese gaming company called Tencent has invested in Rocketwerkz, yet it’s not the publisher). Dean Hall managed to gather experienced staff for his studio, including former employees of Creative Assembly, Bethesda, and Bohemia Interactive. The studio takes after Valve when it comes to its cell structure, which means that smaller teams of developers have a lot of creative autonomy and often gravitate together around a larger project. “And with this big project that is exactly what it is”, Hall said. ‘It started out as independent cells working on different stuff who sort of end up on the same track and their work melds together”. Let’s wait for an official announcement to hear more details.
