After many years of work, fan group Daggerfall Workshop has finally released version 1.0 of the wildly impressive open-source project Daggerfall Unity. Thus, the creators have fulfilled all their plans for new elements and features, and in the future they will focus mainly on improving the mod's technical layer.
Recall that the project is in practice a remake of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, a classic RPG from Bethesda. The 1996 original is almost unplayable today and is still plagued by a huge number of issues. Daggerfall Unity fixes that. The creators ported the entire game to the Unity engine, and in the process implemented a ton of graphics and gameplay improvements.
Daggerfall Unity offers an improved interface and modern mouse and keyboard controls. The biggest change, however, is the graphics, as the creators not only added support for ultra widescreen resolutions and implemented new effects (including dynamic lighting), but also remastered character sprites and converted many sprites in the environment into 3D models, while beautifying most locations. In addition, the developers have fixed virtually all the bugs of the original game, which is crucial, since the number of bugs in Daggerfall is legendary (the game has even earned the nickname Buggerfall). Another advantage is that the whole thing is very mod-friendly and the project has already lived to see a large and very active modding community.
It should be added that Daggerfall Unity is not a standalone game and requires possession of the game files. However, this is not a big obstacle, as Daggerfall was made available for free a long time ago. If you don't want to mess around with a standalone installation, alternatively, you can simply download a ready-made package prepared by GOG.com.
