Last night the Academy Awards ceremony took place, during which we got to know this year's winners of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards, commonly known as Oscars. Among them there was an accent connected with video games. The statuette for the best short documentary film went to Colette, a short movie developed as part of the VR first-person shooter Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
The documentary was produced by Respawn Entertainment in collaboration with Oculus Studios. In the game, it was placed in a gallery of multimedia extras and educational materials. Colette was also screened at several festivals, and thanks to The Guardian, the film is also available on YouTube.
The documentary shows Colette Marin-Catherine's journey to Germany. The woman was a member of the French Resistance during World War II and in the documentary travels to the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp where her brother was killed.
Colette was directed by Anthony Giacchino, who admits that he is not a gamer himself. However, he was drawn to the project by the prospect of presenting this kind of film to a new audience. This is the first time that a project developed with a video game in mind received an Oscar.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond was released in December last year, exclusively on PC. The game was developed with VR technology in mind. The project can be purchased on Steam. It is currently discounted by 20%.
