According to a report by Variety, Sandfall Interactive, the developers of upcoming RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, have partnered with Story Kitchen to create a film adaptation of their game. This announcement comes shortly after an impressive Developer Direct from Xbox, but months before Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is expected to be released on April 24th, 2025. Story Kitchen has helped bring many video game adaptations to the big and small screen, but is this too soon for this particular game?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is being adapted into a movie, even though the game isn’t out yet

Story Kitchen, Sandfall’s partner in this adaptation process, via their website, “is a dynamic media company passionate about universe building and franchise architecture; specializing in the adaptation of videogames and other ‘non-traditional’ IP into Film/TV.” The company was founded by Dmitri M. Johnson, known for being a producer of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Story Kitchen has announced several other projects, including a Tomb Raider live-action TV series, a film adaptation of Just Cause, and a deal with Sega to adapt Shinobi.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the debut game from Sandfall Interactive, a studio founded in 2020. After announcing their game at the Xbox Games Showcase last summer, Sandfall was one of four studios featured in last week’s Xbox Developer Direct. The new gameplay featured in that presentation apparently caught the attention of fans, because a few days ago, the team posted on social media that the physical collector’s edition of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had already sold out in the US. Clearly, there is plenty of excitement and anticipation to go around for this game.

Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg said to Variety; “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoes alike.” The premise of Clair Obscur has certainly enraptured future players. The game features a god-like Paintress that annually paints a new descending number, causing everyone of that age to vanish. Facing extinction, the players follow humanity’s latest hope in Expedition 33, on a mission to confront the Paintress before the next number is painted.

Sandfall’s CEO/Creative Director, Guillaume Broche, said to Variety; “[Story Kitchen’s] expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.” With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 planned to launch later this year, we will have to see how it is received by fans, and how that impacts the film plans.
