Chinese Police Investigates Poisoning of Local Video Game Developer
The Chinese police are investigating the death of the head of Yoozoo Games. The services have arrested one of the Chinese developer's associates, suspected of poisoning the man.
Reports of mass layoffs and crunch in game dev studios have repeatedly reminded us that developing video games is not an easy job. However, for one Chinese developer it turned out to be much more risky business. The Shanghai police have launched an investigation into the poisoning of Lin Qi, the founder of Yoozoo Games.
The head of the studio responsible for Games of Thrones: Winter is Coming and League of Angels, among others, died on the first day of Holidays at the hospital where he was hospitalised eight days earlier. There, it was discovered that Qi was poisoned. As a result, the police detained one of the dev's associates "in accordance with law" for the duration of the investigation. The suspect is to be the head of the movie department at Yoozoo Games, who was in charge of the movie adaptation of Liu Cixin's novel The Three-Body Problem created for Netflix (via The Guardian).
Lin Qi was definitely not one of the greatest celebrities on the video game market, but he certainly didn't complain about his earnings. His fortune was valued at about a billion dollars, as some would say, could be attributed to the aforementioned League of Angels (or more precisely, to its pushy microtransactions).
