Embracer Group Acquires Baldur's Gate Remake Devs
Canadian studio Beamdog - known for remasters of the Baldur's Gate series - has been acquired by Aspyr Media, which is currently working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Thus, the purchased developer will join the Embracer Group family.
Currently working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake, studio Aspyr Media has just announced the acquisition of Canadian developer Beamdog. The latter studio is mainly known for the remaster of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and its sequels (not to mention refreshed versions of other iconic RPGs), as well as the original expansion titled Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear.
- Aspyr Media itself was acquired at the beginning of February 2021 by Saber Interactive, which in turn is an operating group owned by Swedish company Embracer Group (which also owns THQ Nordic and Gearbox Software, among others).
Terms and conditions of the acquisition
Beamdog will remain fully independent and act as Aspyr's in-house studio. No word yet on when the acquisition will be finalized. Beamdog CEO Trent Oster commented on the partnership:
"This acquisition will open up many exciting opportunities. Beamdog can now focus its talent, effort, and imagination on creating great games that we ourselves would love to play, while taking care of RPG fans' favorite productions.
Beamdog's first original IP is the beginning of the next chapter in our studio's history."
MythForce
The aforementioned new IP is a first-person action game with roguelike elements MythForce, of the announcement of which we wrote earlier today. The game has quite an unusual visual style, modeled on American cartoons from the 80s, such as He-Man.
