Battlefield 2042 Was to Have Much Better Environmental Destruction
It turns out that initially Battlefield 2042 was to have a much more advanced system of environment destruction, allowing for, emong other things, demolition of skyscrapers. DICE abandoned this idea, however.
- BF2042 was supposed to have a more advanced environmental destruction system, enabling us to demolish any skyscraper, among other things;
- DICE abandoned this idea;
- The reason was the lack of time to implement it and excesive system requirements of such a solution.
Battlefield 2042 has been a disappointment. The released version has so many problems that it's rare to see what planned features weren't implemented. It turns out, for example, that originally BF2042 was to have a much more impressive system of environmental destruction.
The source of this information is a verified insider Tom Henderson. Over the past few years, he has repeatedly shared details about the game that turned out to be true. One of the few exceptions were his reports of an advanced destruction system that would enable the players to demolish any skyscraper and other buildings. According to Henderson, such mechanics were originally in the plans, but DICE eventually abandoned it.

There were two reasons for abandoning the idea. Firstly, it was too demanding in terms of hardware. Battlefield 2042 increased the size of clashes to 128 players and implementing advanced destruction at such a scale proved unfeasible.
Secondly, there was no time. The devs were in a hurry to make it in time for the November release and it was decided that there were other priorities. After seeing how technically poor the finished game turned out to be, it's easy to believe that the developers wanted to save time wherever they could.
Henderson believes that DICE could revisit the idea of total environment destruction in the next game, but that would likely require reducing battles to 64 players at a time.
The game's release took place on November 19, simultaneously on PC (both on Steam and Origin), as well as PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Those who purchased the Gold or Ultimate edition, could start playing a week earlier.
