- Electronic Arts announced that Battlefield 2042's beta tests were delayed to the second half of the summer;
- The reason for this decision is the desire to take a better look at cross-play.
Yesterday, we reported that Battlefield 2042 will offer cross-play to console and PC owners. It's worth mentioning, however, that we also learned that the game's beta test, which were supposed to begin this month, has been delayed until the second half of the summer. It was already known that EA DICE will choose their own testers from among the veterans of the Battlefield series. Now we know that the delay is due to the desire to better test the cross-play feature.
"One of your most frequently asked questions is about cross-play. We can confirm it’s a function we’re looking to build and test for Battlefield 2042. To accommodate that, we’ve made the decision to move the Technical Playtest to later this summer so we’ll have the opportunity to test the cross-play functionality.
This means a few thousand participants will join us to help us test some of our new features and functionality that we’re building from the ground up for Battlefield 2042. Do keep in mind that the Technical Playtest is purposefully not intended to be the full experience you will see in the Open Beta, or at launch. It is a development-led environment with only a subset of features, focused on technical performance," reads FAQ on EA's website reads.
EA emphasizes that it will inform the lucky chosen ones about their ability to participate in beta tests. For this purpose, it is recommended to update your profile in EA Playtesting. Developers emphasize that the registration itself does not guarantee participation in tests. During the event players with PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC will be able to play together.
In the final version of Battlefield 2042 the cross-play option will enable owners of current-gen consoles to play together with PC users. Due to technological limitations, owners of PS4 and Xbox One will only be able to play among themselves.
Battlefield 2042 will debut on October 22, this year, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series X|S.
