Atari is Doing Better Than You Might Think - It Just Bought System Shock Remake Devs
Atari has acquired Nightdive Studios, a team known for games such as Turok Remastered, Blood: Fresh Supply, PowerSlave Exhumed and the upcoming System Shock remake.
Atari is now a much forgotten company. However, it is not as weak as it might seem, as it has just bought out Nightdive Studios, a team that is currently working on a remake of System Shock.
- Initially, the acquisition cost Atari $10 million.
- The existing owners of Nightdive Studios may receive up to an additional $10 million extra in the future, depending on the performance of the team's future games.
- Nightdive Studios was founded in 2012. The team specializes in revamping old games and has produced such games as System Shock: Enhanced Edition, Turok Remastered, Blood: Fresh Supply, Shadow Man Remastered, PowerSlave Exhumed or Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition.
This purchase makes sense for Atari. The company is now mainly focused on releasing remasters and reissues of old games (e.g. Asteroids: Recharged or Missile Command: Recharged), so Nightdive Studios is a great fit for this business strategy.
I just hope that the acquired team will not be limited to refreshing games from the Atari catalog. Nightdive Studios has done a ton of good work in reminding players of forgotten games from many different companies, and it would be a shame if this were to change.
As a final reminder System Shock remake will be released on May 30, this year. On that day, the game will debut exclusively on PC, while versions for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles will be released at a later date.
Nightdive Studios' plans for this year also include SiN: Reloaded, developed together with Slipgate Ironworks. In the case of this project, however, we do not yet know when exactly we can expect its release.
