Insider Suggests Assassin's Creed During Hundred Years' War or Third Crusade
It's not yet known where the next installment of Assassin's Creed will take us. However, a well-known insider shared some clues.
- Insider j0nathan has published hints about the next installment of Assassin's Creed;
- Some players believe that they fit the period of the Hundred Years' War;
- One Reddit user noted that the information also fits the character of Richard the Lionheart.
It's only been four months since the release of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, and fans of the series are already speculating on the setting of the next installment. Officially, no hints have been shared as to where the new game would take us. However, French youtuber and insider j0nathan published a video, which contains information about the expected game. At first glance, he comments only on the news about Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and existing rumors about the future of the series. However, the published video contains numerous clues, which were then deciphered by the viewers.
Among the clues spotted in the video were the Templar symbol and the date 2022, as well as GPS coordinates that referred to places like Dubrovnik, Croatia, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and Sofia, Bulgaria. According to the author of the video, it is in the capital of this country that the next installment of the series is being created. This is because the branch of Ubisoft Sofia is located there. Players have also noticed numerical codes of three colors - white, blue and red. They match a very large number of countries, but are particularly associated with France. The reference to this particular country became even more obvious when two maps appeared in the video. As viewers discovered, one of them depicts Lorraine, a region of France. The other, in turn, is a map of the island of Corfu in Greece. Interestingly, players also noticed an icon resembling the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Some players have taken these clues as support for their theory that the next installment in the series will be set during the Hundred Years' War. This information partly coincides with previous leaks. They also pointed to the Middle Ages and the setting of France and Germany. Some rumors also referred specifically to the aforementioned conflict. The working title of the game was to be Assassin's Creed: Tournament. According to its meaning players were to take on the role of a tournament champion, who gets entangled in a great clash between England and France. j0nathan did not confirm this information directly, but his clues may coincide with them.
It should be noted, of course, that the above information is unconfirmed. So far, we have not received any official communications from Ubisoft. However, it's worth considering whether the choice of the Hundred Years' War as a setting for the next part of Assassin's Creed would not be a logical move. Setting the story in this period would have several major advantages. First and foremost, it would fit with the new gameplay element introduced in Valhalla. A war between two medieval powers would allow for further development of the siege mechanics. Ubisoft would also have the opportunity to create another vast world that would allow for very long exploration. The only question is whether it wouldn't be too similar to the one presented in the latest installment.
What's more, this period abounds in very distinctive historical characters. The Assassin's Creed series has always enable us to experience close encounters with people we know from school textbooks. Depending on the timing, The Hundred Years' War would allow such important people as Joan of Arc or Edward III to be woven into the plot. Some rumors also mentioned the colourful character of the alchemist Nicolas Flamel. He could in some ways fulfill the role of Leonardo da Vinci from the second installment.
Part of the problem is the reference to the Templars. During the Hundred Years' War, the famous order simply did not exist. It was disbanded after high-profile trials 26 years before it began. Of course, many parts of Assassin's Creed have shown us that the mysterious group continued to function even hundreds of years after these events. Referring directly to the Templars rather than the Order of the Ancients, however, may reveal the historical period the insider had in mind. In the context of the Hundred Years' War, the inclusion in the video of the coordinates of Croatia, which is in no way connected to the war between England and France, also remains a mystery.
These problems may be solved by the theory of another player. According to Reddit user BrunoHM, this information fits more with the biography of Richard the Lionheart and his participation in the Third Crusade. Much of the clues posted by j0nathan tie in well with this scenario. These times would explain the Templar sign and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Also the other locations mentioned in hints are related to the English king. On his way back from the crusade he visited the island of Corfu and Croatia. Afterwards he stayed for some time in the prison of Dürnstein. The town is now in Austria. During Richard's lifetime, however, it was part of the Holy Roman Empire, which was dominated by the German people. Lionheart spent the later part of his life in France.
Moreover, the nostalgia associated with such a choice would undoubtedly be an advantage. The return to the crusades theme is at the same time a return to the plot of the first installment of Assassin's Creed series. A new game set in that historical period is also a chance to show the realities of the Third Crusade in a way that wasn't technically possible when the first game was released. At the same time, it's an easy recipe for winning over the series' most hardcore fans.
One of the videos published by te insider's video already allows for two different interpretations of what the clues mean. This, however, is just part of a whole series of many rumors swirling around the yet unannounced game. Other leaks mentioned places such as China or Japan. For any certain information we have to wait until the official announcement from Ubisoft. I have to admit that leaks about setting the action during the Hundred Years' War or the Third Crusade sound very attractive. However encouraging they may look, let's remember that their credibility is difficult to prove.
