Apex Legends, the battle royale shooter set in the Titanfall universe, became one of the first true hits of the year, attracting 10 million people in just three days. The most recent example of the project's success was an analysis of the game's popularity on Twitch.
Since its debut on February 4, the game has always been ranked first among the most popular Twitch games. What's interesting is the comparison with the top-dog of battle royal - Fortnite. Last week, the website's users have watched 11 million more gameplay hours in Apex Legends than with the hit from Epic Games studio. The success is all the bigger as there were 600,000 more hours of Fortnite material emitted during the same period.
In addition, last week Apex Legends had an average of 183,000 spectators at the same time. In the case of Fortnite it was "only" 116 thousand. During these seven days, Apex Legends had an audience peak of almost 492 thousand viewers at the same time, while Fortnite only 326 thousand viewers.
It's hard to say how long this trend will continue, but for the time being Apex Legends seems to be the first big shooter phenomenon in a long time. Players and spectators were clearly thirsty for something new and Respawn Entertainment managed to make the most of this situation.
The long-term popularity of the game will depend on the pace of its development. Fans have dug out the game's further developmenty plan. Currently, players play in three-person teams. However, Apex Legends files have also contained references to solo and pair modes. It seems like the developers intend to add them shortly. In both cases, 60 people would take part in the battle.
Let's remind that Apex Legends was released on February 4, this year, simultaneously on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game employs a free-to-play model with microtransactions.
