AMD: Component Availability Won't Improve Until 2022

AMD is steadily ramping up production, but component availability is expected to be poor until at least the end of this year. The head of the company, Lisa Su, predicts improvement in the global market in 2022, although not in all its segments.

Lisa Su, the head of AMD, gave an interview to Barrons, sharing insights about the company's operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. When asked about the future, she emphasized that the company's production capacity is increasing every quarter, but the market situation may be poor until the end of 2021. Next year, component availability is expected to improve, but a great deal is expected to depend on the market segment.

As Su pointed out, many decisions in the industry are made years in advance, and the huge increase in demand over the past 12 months has exceeded even the most optimistic forecasts.. The recipe is to be a constant increase in capacity. However, this is a very expensive and time-consuming thing to achieve.

The most difficult situation is on the GPU market, where an additional problem is a high demand from miners of the popular bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, which has drastically increased prices in stores. If in search of cheaper hardware we look around for used models, let's be careful. The global market is currently flooded with cards coming from Chinese crypto mining rigs, including GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3070, as well as AMD from the RX 6000 family. Such cards worked under very high loads and in unknown conditions. Some units may therefore be much more prone to failure.

Lisa Su became the head of AMD in October 2014. Since then, the company's value has increased 30 times, and the products are very popular. AMD's Ryzen CPUs have successfully broken Intel's dominance, and GPUs are a real competition for Nvidia products. Su is also the first and so far only woman to receive the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal, an honor bestowed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, which sets standards for electronic devices.
