If last year’s Age of Sigmar presentation left us stunned, AdeptiCon 2025 definitely stepped things up. And if you were at the event in Milwaukee, your mind was probably blown when they introduced its next big reveal – this time, The Old World is getting a massive addition with the Empire of Grand Cathay.

Total War Warhammer fans rejoice – Grand Cathay has been revealed

The Old World is also getting new battalion boxes for the Wood Elves and Beastmen with some really exciting minifigures making a comeback. But let’s cut to the chase and jump to the Empire of Grand Cathay. Here’s the full trailer.

Just like every other faction in The Old World, Grand Cathay is getting a battalion box packed with 50 plastic miniatures. At the core, we’ve got 30 Jade Warriors, which you can field as two units of 15 or three units of 10 – solid, disciplined infantry. Backing them up are 10 Jade Lancers, which can be split into two squads of five, each with full command. And to top it all off, you get two artillery pieces that can be built as either a Cathayan Grand Cannon or a Fire Rain Rocket Battery, complete with crew.

And now, the big guns: Shugengan Lord on Great Spirit Longma, Gate Masters of the Celestial Cities, and that Sky Lanter that’s definitely going to take me ages to finish. At least the Cathayan Sentinel looks nice and easy to paint (yeah, I wish, with my shaky hands, it’s still going to take me at least a few days). And at the top of the crown, Miao Ying with the Storm Dragon.

Now, there were some theories that Cathay would be a DLC faction at best, not one that would be part of the base game right from the start – which is why we were all so shocked by this. Total War fans were absolutely thrilled by the reveal. Grand Cathay was introduced in Total War: Warhammer III as a mighty empire inspired by ancient China. As one Reddit user put it, “Thank you Total War for making this possible” – a perfect summary of how the community feels.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
