„Absolute Masterpiece”. Quentin Tarantino Loves The Sequel to The 1980s Horror Movie, Which Turned Out to Be a Flop
Quentin Tarantino is delighted with the sequel to the 1980s comedy horror film, which unfortunately didn't get much attention back then.
Quentin Tarantino is eager to talk about the films he liked. And although sequels to his own productions are rare, this doesn’t mean at all that the director is opposed to them. There is even one second part of the famous series, started in the 1980s, which the filmmaker even loves and considers it a masterpiece.
We're talking about a movie from as far back as the 1990s, specifically Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which, although it had poor box-office results, boasts a positive reception from critics, as seen on Rotten Tomatoes. And another person who speaks positively about Joe Dante's film is actually Tarantino, who talked about his visit to the set of this production and his opinion of it in the Video Archives podcast.
Somebody [jokingly] says [on the Gremlins 2 set], "You know what we could have a little Santa Claus and the reindeer flying over the moon in the background". Ant then Joe goes, "Ok, don't suggest it like that to me, unless you're prepared for me to do it, because I'm liable to think that's a good idea and make you do it". I actually think Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a fucking masterpiece. Absolute masterpiece. The greatest [counterpart to] Mad magazine ever turned into a film.
Gremlins is an undeniably unique comedy horror series with an inimitable atmosphere. It's not at all surprising that Tarantino loves one of its installments, which he surely also has a special fondness for precisely because he was invited to its set by director Joe Dante. Tarantino was interviewing the filmmaker in his office at the time, but unexpectedly ended up on the set with him, where, he explained, one of the final scenes had just been shot.
And if you don't remember or don't know, in Gremlins 2 Gizmo ended up in the hands of a scientist and during the experiments conducted on him new gremlins were created. And this time these crazy creatures are wreaking havoc in New York City.
