For several years, a group of fans has been working on an unofficial remake of the cult Need for Speed: Underground 2, which is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. The developers have just released the first demo of the project.

  2. The demo weighs 2.2 GB.

The project is quite impressive, especially for the early stage it’s in. However, it does resemble more a remaster than a full remake. This is because the project is mainly the work of a single developer, assisted by a handful of people. Therefore, creating all graphical elements from scratch was never an option. Instead, they were simply transferred from the original to Unreal Engine 5 and slightly tweaked.

Clearly, the expectations of some players were higher. In the comments under the gameplay transcript published on the NostalgiaNexus YouTube channel, many people express disappointment that this is effectively a remaster on a new engine. Others, however, emphasize how impressive it is to have such a faithful recreation of Need for Speed: Underground 2's gameplay.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the only project of this type. Another group of fans is working on porting Need For Speed: Most Wanted to Unreal Engine 5. In the case of this production, a demo has not yet been made available.
